Election Day is November 3rd |
|
On November 3rd Houston will be electing a new Mayor, City Controller, and City Council Members.
This is a very important time for the City of Houston and for our future. I am asking that each and every one
of you take the time on November 3rd and vote.
It was many years ago that Abraham Lincoln stated democracy is “government of the people, by the people and for the people.”
We have the privilege to live a country where you have a say in who governs the land. We are also very privileged to have
politicians that are accessible and accountable to the people. Over the past five and half years I have prided myself
in my accessibility and accountability to the people.
Voting sends a clear message about the issues the people are concerned with and those that should be a priority in our government.
This year our priority has been the economy, and we need to continue to make sure that Houston remains on solid financial ground.
I am proud of the work I have done to ensure that the City of Houston’s finances are better off than most of the country.
Managing the City of Houston's finances during these challenging times requires steady, experienced leadership.
As your next City Controller, I will make sure we stay on course to weather the economic storm, and move Houston
forward toward a brighter future.

The City of Houston is expanding its free Residential Energy Efficiency
Program (REEP) and is currently taking applications. The program is
designed to provide households with energy efficiency upgrades to their

Houston, in partnership with CenterPoint has successfully weatherized over
7,000 homes, and has seen a significant decrease in energy costs for these
households. On average, the electricity bills have been reduced by 12% to
18% each month. The program is at no cost to the household. If you are
interested, please complete the attached application, and send it in. The
City will then determine whether your household is eligible for the program.

We are so thankful to all of you that volunteered! The workbooks are provided by Money Management International.
The volunteers speak with small groups of visitors about money management and credit for about five minutes each,
then leave them with the workbooks to take home and review later. Time: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm – Monday through Friday,
October 12-16, 2009. Please let me know if you can volunteer and/or bring others along to assist

Celebrating Twenty Years of Speaking Out and Driving Change |
|
|
As it was inscribed twenty years ago, "To serve as the voice for children in the greater Houston area," the
original mission of CHILDREN AT RISK still rings true today. Founded in 1989 by a small, but committed group of
child advocates who sought out to alarm our city into action through a publication titled Children at Risk,
we have spent two decades speaking out for the needs of Houston's youth on issues ranging from public education to
human trafficking. We ask that you, as a fellow voice for our children, join us on October 20th, 2009 at our Accolades
luncheon to celebrate the transformation of CHILDREN AT RISK from an organization researching the multitude of
obstacles our children face, to one that also drives macro-level change to better the future of our city and state.

Join Clyde Drexler on November 14th for the Houston SleepOut |
|
|
I hope you’ll consider joining Clyde Drexler (yes, he is going to spend the night)
and hundreds of other SEARCH friends as we “Sleep Out” Saturday, November 14, 2009.
This event is a very easy and fun way to bond with friends while also raising support
for SEARCH and awareness about the growing problem of homelessness in our community.
Young folks are allowed with parent/adult supervision.
If you’re not the outdoorsy type or don’t want to spend the night out in a downtown park,
you can still be part of this great event. It’s really easy. Go to
the website www.sleepout.org, create a fun(d)-raising team,
and send the web link to ask your friends, family, congregation, and co-workers to contribute
to your team’s goals.
We need your help to pass the message along. The more people we can link to SEARCH,
the more we can do to help those most in need. For more information, email info@sleepout.org .
